With the hiring process becoming more and more global, virtual interviews are becoming more popular, making the already nerve-wracking experience even more so. So as employers embrace video technologies, it’s important to get comfortable with this type of interview. That’s why we’ve brought you four tips to wow a hiring committee through the camera lens.
  1. Practice. Just like with any other interview, practice makes perfect. But when it comes to video interviews, it’s important to also rehearse in front of the camera. This will give you a chance to set everything up, see what you’ll look like to the interviewer, and test out your equipment (i.e. mic, camera, etc.).
  2. Non-verbals. These cues are much more noticeable in a video-conference. Be aware of your facial expressions and be sure to make eye contact - which means looking at the lens and not the screen. Again, these are things that you should pay attention to when practicing beforehand.
  3. Environment. It’s crucial to not only make sure your technology is up to snuff, but you need to test out your environment, too. Pay attention to everything from lighting to the background you’ll be in front of - these small details can have a big effect on how you come across to your potential employers.
  4. Attire. It can be tempting to “dress up” only your top half and to leave your pajama bottoms on for some extra comfort. Aside from it making you feel a little less professional than an in-person interview, it’s also risky - the last thing you want is to shift in your seat or get up unexpectedly, only to reveal you’re wearing cartoon PJs.
Whether you’re a technophobe or a technophile, video-conferences are here to stay. So embrace the conveniences and treat it like any other interview - with professionalism and polish. Combining that with these tips is sure to have the job offers rolling in!
