Many people hop on Twitter with the assumption that if you Tweet it, they will come. Sadly this is not the case for many people and businesses on Twitter. An awesome Twitter presence requires a lot of different tactics all rolled into one to create the best strategy for you and your brand. Below are 10 of the easiest ways to improve your Twitter presence immediately.
Tweet more
It’s really that simple, but there is a twist….Tweeting more doesn’t mean to Tweet a bunch of meaningless promotions and crap. What I really mean it to Tweet more good quality Tweets. Stuff you know people will engage with. Keep that Twitter stream active so people start becoming familiar with you in their Tweet stream.
Engage with others
Make a goal to Tweet x number of people a day and with that goal make sure you’re Tweeting people you’ve never Tweeted before. Ask how their day is, comment on a Tweet, talk about a hashtag they’re Tweeting about.
Seek and follow
One of the easiest ways to grow your following is to tap into followers of like-minded accounts or those that connect with your competitors. Not only is this easy, but it’s silly not to do.
Trending topics
You know what I’m talking about. Usually there’s at least one having to do with One Direction or Justin Bieber, but there are usually phrases or trending hashtags like#RuinADateIn5Words. If you’re a restaurant you could Tweet something like Sorry I don’t like YOURRESTAURANTHERE #RuinADateIn5Words #HashtagLocationIfSpecifcToOneArea
Once again, it’s so silly to not participate in this. It’s a super easy, not to mention fun way to get others engaging with your brand.
Curate content
Use tools to curate content that is complimentary to your brand. You’re specific to a city, curate positive news, traffic and weather to share along with facts and tips that your potential clients and customers would be interested in. There are so many tools you can use to do this. Check out the KiMedia Strategies post “Tools We Use To Curate Shareable Social Media Content”
Schedule content
This is by far the only way I stay sane managing upwards of 30 Twitter accounts. I am just starting to really get used to HootSuite, I’m sad that MarketMeSuite appears to have taken a turn for the worse after an acquisition. These are the tools I use to schedule content and YES I use each and every one of them daily because sadly there isn’t any one tool that does everything I need.
- HootSuite
- ManageFlitter
- Swayy.co
On occasion I log into Klout to see what kind of content they suggest sharing and schedule from them, but that might be only a couple times a month.
Use hashtags
And by this I mean relevant hashtags that people are actually using and engaging with. There’s no sense in hashtagging everything #YouCompanyIsAwesome when no one is engaging with that. Now this is definitely different if you’re encouraging people to use a hashtag like that for a chat, contest or just general convo. If you’re looking to get in front of new eyeballs use hashtags that already have an established audience.
Twitter chats
Twitter chats are great for some many reasons, but in the case of improving your presence this will actually help with many of the above tips. Chats help you engage new people, new people that are interested in similar topics because obviously you’d have to be interested in the chat topic if you’re giving up an hour of your life to talk about it, right?
Engage influencers
These could be influencers in your space, influencers using social media in general or influencers in your city. Have conversations, don’t just Tweet your promos at them. Ask them what they’re up to, compliment an article, RT a blog of theirs….whatever you do, make sure you don’t look like a spammy scammer!
Be unique
Stop trying to be the next Oprah or the next Best Buy online. It isn’t going to happen. You have to put in the time and effort if you really want to see success with Twitter. There has to be something that sets you or your company apart from everyone else, use that. Showcase your awesomeness in pictures and text and you are sure to stand out in the oh so crowded Twitterverse.
Good luck and if you’re feeling up to it give me a follow at @_KimRandall. I’d be very happy to have a new Twitter friend!
